To an Old Friend
The Paddington Trio - Tuulia Hero on violin, Patrick Moriarty on cello, and Stephanie Tang on piano - bring together three works shaped by loss and remembrance. Ellen Lindquist’s Shining Through, a piece that’s become something of a calling card for the trio, is performed in memory of the late Kaija Saariaho. Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2, written in memory of his closest friend Ivan Sollertinsky, moves from aching grief to bitter, dance-like fury. The programme closes with Tchaikovsky’s sorrowful and tender Piano Trio in A minor, composed in memory of Nikolai Rubinstein.
